I had my XBMC installed and running well on Ubuntu!
Better than WIn7? that remains to be seen - certainly boots quicker but what about access speeds to streamable media and HD quality??
Given the Vista SMB connection issues i was loath to use this for XBMC on Ubuntu.
Historically, for the Xbox XBMC i have ccxGUI installed on my Vista machine which offers up my shares through XNS.
I browsed to this share in XBMC on Ubuntu and connected. A test stream of a SD .avi however was painfully slow! Oh no! not all this effort and it's no quicker than Win 7!!??
So, Plan B. I mounted my Vista Shares on Ubuntu and created links in my Home folder. To do this, I installed Samba and then created permanent shares in fstab.
I then deleted my XNS sources in XBMC and added these new links from my Home folder. 5x quicker! NICE!
Next up, I tested HD using a .mkv file. NOT NICE!
Juddering and Audio out of sync :(
I double checked my XBMC video and audio settings from me earlier post - all OK.
So back to the Oracle that is Google...
First, I changed some BIOS settings:
Enter the BIOS on setup, navigate to advanced settings and set the video RAM to 512mb instead of Auto...
No improvement :(
Next, I tweaked my xorg.conf file...
No improvement :(
I then found a post by user 'cowfodder' who suggest:
sudo apt-get install libvdpau1
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nvidia-vdpau/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
HUGE IMPROVEMENT! Thanks Cowfodder! :)
So now my XBMC is scanning all my music and films, so next step is to sort out my library
RESULT!
